The Nelsonville/Summerfield Cemetery is a historic cemetery located in El Dorado County, California near Placerville. It is maintained by a small group of volunteer caretakers who live in the Mosquito/Swansboro community. This cemetery is located on private property, however, the property owner has given permission to access it from La Paz Road for historical, genealogical or other respectful purposes. Directions to the cemetery can be obtained at Frank’s Diner on Finnon Lake in Mosquito. Call the Diner at (530) 409-1977 or stop in at 100 Rock Creek Rd, Mosquito, CA 95667. Frank can provide a perfect pioneer picnic to bring with you. In addition to the markers or known burials, there are approximately 10 unidentified graves which, according to legend, include "five Dance Hall Girls". The origin of this legend is unknown.
Nelsonville was established in the 1850s and 1860s to support logging and mining. The town burned down in 1865 and was never rebuilt. The local area is now an unincorporated area called Mosquito.
When visiting the Nelsonville/Summerfield Cemetery, please be thoughtful of neighbors and keep noises minimal. A small turnout on La Paz Road is located close to the rugged path that leads to the cemetery. Please park completely off of the road.
